Character Name: Sync the Tempest
Character Canon: Tales of The Abyss
History: wiki tiki
AU History: Being that the AU is sans cloning for now, Sync will be a somewhat expected product of Union's society; Not wishing to have to amount to the same things his parents did, and not enjoying the professions they were wanting him to employ himself into, Sync failed to fit in with his family much. His frequent habit of copying to an uncanny (Being done unconsciously by use of Mimic)extent has lead to the nickname of Sync.
Hitting a critical point with his family, Sync has abruptly left and struck out on his own, becoming a Trainer rather than being groomed for such things as an eventual appointment to the Council, like his siblings. Forgoing his real name, he now uses the nickname Sync exclusively to refer to himself.
The rift with him and family is not a good point to talk about, and he will often speak about himself as if he has no family at all and is an orphan. This is at odds with what education he does have as his family, being well-off, did have access to private tutors and such. While he puts on a brave front, he has been facing a personal crisis since his leaving of home; what to do with his life. While being a Trainer helps, he eventually may have to stop, and return ashamed and defeated to his family; not a pleasant prospect for the young man. As such, he can still be brash, slightly embittered, and prone to teenage moodswings as well as angst.
Sync has been aged up to 17, having been become a Trainer after displaying an odd propensity for it(Being suspected to be Enlightened) since his application at 15.
A minor mention is that being given with Jade-Mun's permission, he and Sync may know or at least recognize eachother from their families' interactions at events like social gatherings and such.
Canon Personality: Sync is a pretty complicated character with a lot of potential motivations and deeper aspects to his personality, that sadly are not touched on because despite his partial important to the plot, he is side-lined beyond what his backstory brings to it. So we shall present what is known, and then move on to what can be implied based of what we know and the scant available expanded universe that has been translated.
As a start, Sync is portrayed directly as a nihilist. He had been specifically told moments after his creation that his life was worthless; he could not read the Score and was unsuitable to be the replica of the Fon Master, Ion. Not really understanding this but understanding the basic concept of his life was likely disheartening, as was his fate. He and his fellow failed replicas were sealed in the active volcano Mt. Zaleho, originally just to be kept there, because their Fonons--basic components of life and existence, would separate and leave no trace of them when they died. Instead the guards had a crueler fate in mind and tossed the replicas into the monster-infested and active portion of the volcano itself. (Some materials claim Sync hid behind a rock, others claim he used his physical abilities to hang onto a rock out of sight after being thrown) Surviving, he was shortly found by Van Grants who came to investigate the results of the Fomicry experiment, and found only Sync. Giving him name from the phrase the boy kept repeating, "The Synchronization Level is the problem...", Sync was told he didn't have to have what was originally planned for in life, and he would take him in.
While this sounds very magnanimous, it was in reality anything but. Sync quickly understood he was a tool. One that was treated well, but he had so little freedoms even if he had so much. He could never show his face in public, instead having to wear the mask made for him lest he be discovered and killed, and the rest of the Order being turned inside out from the scandal. He also felt very isolated because he could not give himself away, and further more very jaded because he had to live with the Fon Master Ion--another replica, like himself, having to be in the same general area often. He also grew jaded because he saw how easily Van used other people, likely being at least vaguely aware of the circumstances regarding his fellow God-Generals, which all save one were being used as tools by Van to further his schemes. Which Sync embraced utterly. The irony was that his life served no meaning because he was defected, and no one else on the planet Auldrant's did either, because the Score was slowly edging them on a path of destruction that would kill all life upon it. So, jaded and bitter, he served Van only because of the final goal, destroying the Score that caused the circumstances of his life to occur.
As a result of all of these, in-game, Sync displays a dichotomy typical of a teen. He tries hard to appear almost emotionless and mature, handling things efficiently and calmly. He follows orders quietly, and stops at nothing to fulfill a command he's been issued, feeling his life has no value at all, and if he can't at least do what he's been told, he really shouldn't exist. He doesn't truly hide that he is unhappy with his life, at least not to those that try to get to know him, but he predictably has been sworn to secrecy regarding his existence.
He's also prone to emotional outbursts, and given his life and circumstance, exceptional cruelty, perhaps all the more painful to watch because several times he is given a chance to change his fate, as the party tries to accept him in more than once only for him to reject the offer because he feels it is out of pity, and not having any good experiences bestowed upon him, seems a worthless gesture. Indeed, when anything that can be equated as a morally "good" thing is offered, he will defensively back down, even twisting the fact that Van revived him into something pointless that was for nothing more than to help the man carry out his plans even after death was supposed to claim him.
As a properly portrayed Nihilist; when death comes, Sync doesn't fear it at all; willing jumping into the core of the planet on one occasion, and when the party confronts him a final time, laughing bitterly at how he failed to stop them and instead only commenting on wishing for Van to fulfill his plans and destroy the Score before fading into nothingness.
AU Deviation: Sync has some pretty world-breaking changes, primarily due to the fact his life is worth something to himself from not being a defective replica. This will easily make him far less withdrawn and hateful because he also no longer has to hide who he is or risk discovery so he is free to interact with other people. Typical of a teen, his humor will be sarcastic, and likely due to coming from a well-off family, slightly acerbic.
Also a big change will be his actual willingness to help people not entirely out of selfish motivations for himself, how well this manifests I suspect will depend on his CR. Another very notable change will be his want for company like most teens his age. I doubt his brattiness will change greatly as while he is without resources save his own, he is from an upbringing of receiving what he wanted.
Canon Abilities: A list of Sync's Artes and their quotes
That may not be very helpful, but many of the Artes in-game that he uses has a 'wind' motif with them. He is also extremely fast, and a martial artist as well as a very competent spellcaster. This was a very dangerous combination to the party in-game, and in addition to his Artes had access to a very powerful technique known as the Curse Slot. Attacking an enemy and branding it with the Curse Slot, Sync could control his foe when he was within a certain range by evoking emotions from memories and intensifying them. The one time it was used in-game it was used on Guy Cecil, who had at several times in his past had an urge to kill Luke and become very angry with him, and when he was branded with the Curse Slot managed to invoke these memories to have Guy try to kill Luke.
Enlightened Abilities: Okay. After giving this a lot of thought, Endgame will be God of War with Flying/Electric/Dark.
But to start, Sync will be Flying/Dark with Master of Evolution. As Sync is extremely agile in Canon, the Flying type will help facilitate this, and his Dark type will allow for use of the Curse Slot-like mechanisms as well as some mimicking. In the beginning, he will just be agile, and mostly able to mimic, eventually learning he can make "suggestions" to opponents by touching them in some way. As he trains himself he'll be able to also call some very weak electric effects into being but not much and will more so focus on wind-type projectiles and effects.
First Evolution; Sync will gain white wings. Under certain types of lighting, marks will be noticeable on his body, such as weak lighting and things like moonlight. The marks will be dark. His nails will slowly start becoming sharper. More electric phenomena is present, but not much still. Only things like accidental shocks and perhaps with extreme concentration can he muster something akin to a Thundershock. His wings will be able to "unhinge" for lack of a better term, and fold around him much like a long coat, and flight will not be possible for long periods of time, more rather they will help him move faster still. His agility will increase as will his coordination allowing him more of his martial arts-style fighting from his Canon. His skill with the wind will proportionally increase as will his Curse Slot style restrictions on his foe. Specifically, he will be able to purposefully inflict the Curse Slot on his foes, and this will be telegraphed by his hands glowing black before attempting to strike them directly. He will be able to do things like Embargo, Flatter, Quash and so forth to limit his foes attacks and abilities.
Second Evolution; Sync would need to be very affiliated with Electric type Pokemon before this evolution, but his odd genetic structure as well as his Master of Evolution ability negate the need, and he will likely pursue Electric types anyway. Sync will change his Ability into God of War, his new typing will be Flying/Electric/Dark. His wings will turn black and his flight will be more robust as they are much stronger. To reduce wind resistance and the strain on his eyes, he will be able to generate a "mask" of plasma to deflect the wind, specifically the particulate in the air as he flies. The marks on his body will now be visible constantly, and he will bioluminesce very faintly. His wings will still be able to do their coat permutation, and he will have very small feather crests on the ridges of his ears as well as some other small feathers on his hairline. His abilities will be increased further, able to call forth powerful wind effects, summon blasts of lightning from the sky, and even create areas of crushing pressure with shadows and darkness. His claws have likewise receded back into nails for his punching, but he can produce talons of darkness when there is a need, and as before he will telegraph when he is about to use the Curse Slot, but now just a nick will inflict it, and he can throw the energy summoned for it as well to inflict the Curse Slot from a distance. His speed and acrobatics will be on a new level and his influence from the Curse Slot will be able to either "control" a foe or inflict massive restrictions on what it can do, but not both at once, and Sync will need to issue a new Curse Slot, canceling the previous one if he wishes to change the type on his foe.
Starter Pokémon: Fletchling, level 8
Notes/Special Considerations: If you have special things you want to do with your character that can potentially impact the plot such as giving them an ancient power from a clan thought long extinct, here is the place to put it. It's suggested that you contact the moderators beforehand to hash things out if you want to do anything dramatic. You may also PM or IM one of the moderators beforehand if you wish to get the section pre-approved or ask questions on what is and is not allowed.
SAMPLES
First-Person:
No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why? Well, if I had to think about it, something that'd let me have some more freedom. ...Like the wind. Good example; nothing to tie it down.
What do you feel your role in Union is? [There's a pause, and he looks very annoyed at being asked this question, but he rolls his shoulders after a moment.] Same as everyone else; provide for and further the city. [Definitely not what he believes, but the line has been hammered in he can probably offer a dozen variations of "Do what I'm told" since that's what feels like to him.]
You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom? Wisdom. Definitely wisdom. [He's not going to comment that it's more the wisdom to help him find his place in life rather than something to help out Union.]
What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life? Someone that doesn't expect too much out of me and doesn't judge me.
Third-Person:
What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills? Probably the mountain. A little less about danger, but the adventure sounds good. Putting myself in something new to really see if I learn something new.
What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you? [flatly] That I'm good looking. [He then crosses his arms and slumps back in his chair.] There a point to these questions? I dunno. Maybe I respect them too or something.
To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness? ... [He shuffles a bit, crossing his arms again and dipping his head forward to think seriously about this one.] Dunno. I'd like to say whatever it takes, but I'm one guy, and pokemon are pretty fierce sometimes. I guess if it was too much I'd have to get some help.
You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home? My wits I guess. I've also been told I'm pretty quick, maybe I can come up with something, I definitely don't want to kick off out in the wilds.
What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond? Something tough. I can't quite put it out in words, but they need to have a drive, going some where.
When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why? Bonding with it I think. Defeating it seems pointless, and you can research it better after it understands you're not out to hurt it?
